New Year’s Resolutions for Students and Grads

Hayley Jewell

Ah, the start of a new year - time to make some resolutions you’ll actually stick to! Fun fact: a whopping 96% of Gen Z in the UK will make a New Year’s resolutions for 2025 1, so you’re definitely not alone. But forget the usual "I’ll totally go to the gym" stuff. This year, let’s focus on levelling up your career, building some serious skills, and keeping your sanity intact.

1. Set Some Pro Goals (and Actually Stick to Them)

We know, goal-setting can feel like one of those things adults tell you to do, but trust us, it works. Pick a few realistic, career-boosting goals for the year. Want to land that dream internship? Perfect a new skill? Great - write it down and make a plan.

Keep your goals SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. None of that vague "get a job" nonsense. Try, "I want to apply for five internships by March." Boom, now you’ve got a plan.

2. Give Your Digital Profile a Glow-Up

Update your photo, refresh that bio, and show off your skills like the pro you are. Employers are lurking online, so make sure they like what they see.

While you’re at it, take a scroll through your other socials. Clean up anything you wouldn’t want your future boss to see. And if you’re in a creative field, think about setting up a personal website or portfolio to really flex.

3. Get Your Network On

Networking doesn’t have to be cringe. Think of it as making friends with people who can help you out (and who you can help, too). Start by connecting on LinkedIn - drop a friendly message and see where it takes you.

Hit up networking events (yes, even the virtual ones). Your goal? Chat with at least a couple of new people each time. Remember, networking is a two-way street, so be cool, curious, and ready to offer value in return. You never know who might be your next big connection.

4. Master the Art of Time Juggling

Balancing lectures, part-time jobs, and your social life can feel like a circus act. The trick? Time management. Get yourself a planner or download a snazzy app, and actually use it. Schedule your study time, job hunting, and - don’t forget - self-care.

Prioritise like a boss. Focus on what’s urgent and what’ll make the biggest impact. And hey, remember to take breaks. No one’s productive when they’re burnt out and surviving on caffeine and two hours of sleep.

5. Take Care of Number One: You

Look, chasing your goals is great, but you won’t get far if you’re running on fumes. Stress management is key. Find what chills you out - whether it’s yoga, gaming, or rewatching Friends for the 10th time - and make it part of your routine.

Healthy habits aren’t just for gym buffs. Good sleep, regular exercise, and decent meals will keep your brain sharp and your mood in check. When you feel good, you do good - it’s that simple.

6. Embrace the Growth Vibes

Let’s make the upcoming year the year of the growth mindset. This means seeing every stumble as a chance to learn and level up. Got rejected from a job? Ask for feedback. Messed up in an interview? Take notes on what you can do better next time.

Be the person who’s always learning, always improving. Remember, even the pros started somewhere - and they didn’t get there by giving up after the first setback.

Make This Year, Your Year

New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be boring or impossible. Pick a few that will genuinely make a difference in your life - like smashing your career goals, sharpening your skills, and keeping your well-being in check. You’ve got everything you need to make this year your best yet.
